Hardcover w/ Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. This 5.25 x 6.75 inch, unpaginated hardcover book with dust wrapper is an apparent First Edition ? Later State of this title. This book is in spectacularly fine condition with virtually no sign of age or handling wear showing to the paper-covered boards with black cloth spine strip. This copy shows the 1952 copyright with only the LOC catalog number . . . but no additional printing information provided. This copy does have the gr-r-r on about page 23. This book shows no damage or markings inside or out with the paper covers virtually As New and the interior text clean and in fine condition. The text pages show four pages with the tips of the bottom corners dog-eared ? but this is only one-sixteenth of a fold ? and have flattened out nicely. The dust wrapper is in near fine condition with just a bit of discoloration and wear at the top and bottom of the folds and with a quarter-inch closed tear on the top edge ? and a small tear and fold at the spine bottom. The wrapper shows a $2.50 at the top of the front flap, a 30-70 code at the bottom of the front flap ? and the short bio of illustrator Sendak mentions no previous publications ? and with the rear panel indicating the author Krauss with six previous published works. The dust jacket does show the top and bottom corners of the front flap clipped. The jacket is now protected by a mylar cover.

Sewn binding with string is tight and booklet is square and free of major flaws other than some rubbing and small holes to front right upper corner. Copyright page has only 1952 with a note about this printing. No other softcover versions from the first printing are found - "thanks to a number of children and teachers in the Harriet Johnson Nursery School; and special thanks to children in the Rowayton School Kindergarten, and their teacher, Harriet S. Sherman." This book was the first for Sendak and Krauss and helped launch Sendak's career, published 3 years before Harold and the Purple Crayon. Sendak would go on to illustrate seven additional Krauss titles.

First edition, first state state book in first state dust jacket. Charmingly illustrated paper covered boards with teal cloth spine. Back panel has small illustration of jumping child, not the list of Books by Ruth Krauss. No Grr-r-r on (unnumbered) page 21. The dust jacket is price-clipped but the front inside flap is marked with 30-70 and the back flap "About the Author and Artist" includes the reference to The Wonderful Farm. The board panels are lightly scuffed and soiled. Outermost board edges are also scuffed, fore-edge corners are rubbed. Upper and side page edges have foxing. Front and back inside gutters are partially cracked. Previous owner's name and library stamp on FFEP. Some glue discoloration on the end-papers. Text pages are age-toned. A fox-like stain on the upper corners of the title and copyright pages, else internally clean. Dust jacket is soiled overall. Front panel has a number of faint pencil scribbles and a couple of ink marks; back panel smudged. Spine and extremities are sunned. Spine and fore-edge folds are heavily creased and scuffed; spine has one tiny rub-through in the center. Tail of jacket spine has loss across width of 7/8" by up to 5/8" and with several adjacent rubs, a 3/8" closed vertical tear along the front spine fold and an adjacent 1 1/4" diagonal crease to the lower edge. Upper edge at head of jacket spine is chipped across width with loss of up to 1/4" and several adjacent small closed tears and rubs. Lower front fore-edge corner has loss of 5/8" by up to 1/2" with adjacent 5/16" closed vertical tear and adjacent 5/8" diagonal crease. Upper right fore-edge corner of front jacket panel is chipped, with loss of less than 1/4" and with adjacent closed vertical tear of1/4" along the fold. The lower edge of front jacket panel has several horizontal creases, including one anchored by two 1/4" closed and open vertical tears, parallel and distant 1 1/2". The upper fore-edge corner of the back jacket panel is rubbed and with loss of 1/4" and adjacent closed vertical tear of 1/4" along the fold and two diagonal creases to the upper edge of back panel. The lower back fore-edge corner is rub bed and with loss of 1/4". As mentioned above, the inside flap has a 2" by 1 3/8" price clip.
