Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Melbourne University Press, 2004. Softcover (16 x 24 cm), xii, 350 pages. ISBN: 0522850871. Very Good condition. Bumped, scuffed/scratched. Rolled, creased at edges. "This important anthology reveals the many ways in which going to war has formed a cultural bridge between Australia and the world. From the Sudan in 1885 to Afghanistan in 2001, the connection of war to travel is illustrated in the observations of writers. Selecting writings from combatants abroad as well as the reflections of sightseers who travel to foreign battlefields and war sites, Robin Gerster and Peter Pierce reveal how the experience of war has both broadened and refined (and sometimes distorted) Australian views of the world." Weight: (before packaging): 550g.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Hyland House Publishing Pty Ltd., Melbourne, Victoria, 1991. Hardcover (16 x 24 cm), 216 pages. ISBN: 0947062750. The book and dust jacket (dj) are in Good condition. Purple boards with white lettering on spine. Bumped and rubbed. Most notable wear is at head and foot of spine, along bottom edges and at corners. In this entertaining and provocative book, the authors use newspapers, fiction, drama and film in order to define the Australian sixties. They discover a time when Australia both confidently asserted its place in the world and withdrew even more into insularity and dependence, a time of contradiction and paradox, the confusions of which are presented in striking photographs. Weight: 620g.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A vivid, salutary study of Australia's little-known participation in the post-war occupation of Japan. In February 1946, the Australians of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) moved into western Japan to 'demilitarise and democratise' the atom-bombed backwater of Hiroshima Prefecture. For over six years, up to 20,000 Australian servicemen, including their wives and children, participated in an historic experiment in nation-rebuilding dominated by the United States and the occupation's supreme commander, General MacArthur. It was to be a watershed in Australian military history and international relations. BCOF was one of the last collective armed gestures of a moribund empire. The Chifley government wanted to make Australia's independent presence felt in post-war Asia-Pacific affairs, yet the venture heralded the nation's enmeshment in American geopolitics. This was the forerunner of the today's peacekeeping missions and engagements in contentious US-led military occupations.Yet the occupation of Japan was also a compelling human experience. It was a cultural reconnaissance - the first time a large number of Australians were able to explore in depth an Asian society and country. It was an unprecedented domestic encounter between peoples with apparently incompatible traditions and temperaments. Many relished exercising power over a despised former enemy, and basked in the 'atomic sunshine' of American Japan. But numerous Australians developed an intimacy with the old enemy, which put them at odds with the 'Jap' haters back home, and became the trailblazers of a new era of bilateral friendship. Card covers 294pp b&w photos. Card covers covered with 'contact', card edges a little worn; a good copy. Winner of the Age Book of the Year Award for 1988. Scholarly survey of the Australian war mythology. Examines the tendency in Australian war writing towards promoting nationalistic sentiment and ideals and perhaps at times even going so far as to manipulate military events/persons for the propagation of political, cultural or philosophical doctrine. Central to the theme is the aggrandizement of the Digger as a national hero.

Pp. x+294, 8 plates, notes, index; demy 8vo; brown boards, spine lettered in gilt, slight bruise at foot of spine; dust wrapper; Melbourne University Press, Melbourne, 1987. First edition. *Part critical survey and part cultural history, Big-notingtraces and examines the celebration in literature of the Australian military experience from the 1890s to the present day. Gerster reveals that, from at least the time of the Boer War, during which 'Banjo' Paterson used deliberately to distort his dispatches from the front so that the Australian soldiers would get 'fine advertisements' out of them, Australian war writers have acted either overtly or covertly as publicity agents for the 'Digger' as the perceived embodiment of heroic racial characteristics' [wrapper blurb].
