Soft Covers. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Maps (illustrator). 2nd. Heaton Rhodes (1861-1956) was one of the most widely known and respected NZ personalities of the last years of the 1800s and the early 20th century. He was born in Canterbury, of pioneering parents, and at the height of his powers was involved in many activities. These ranged from his philanthropic interests, particularly the Red Cross, of which he became Commissioner, and in the Order of St John, while many local, regional and community organisations benefited from his generosity. He was elected to the House ofRepresentatives in 1899 and in 1907 became MP for Ellesmere. He soon received cabinet appointments as Postmaster-General, Minister for Health and during WWI was the Government special wartime commission from 1915 to 1919, with particular responsibilities for ensuring NZ troops received adequate welfare, support, transport conditions and accommodation. This appoinrtment led to him becoming NZ Minister of Defence from 1920 to 1925. He retired from politics in 1926. Apart from his contributions to political, civic, community and sporting affairs, his stately home and property, Otahuna, became popular for its gardens, which attracted many visits from Christchurch residents. This is a fine biography of a man who strode the national scene during an important period in NZ's development. The book was first published by Canterbury University Press in 2001 with this second edition, with an update on the ownership/renovation of the Otahuna property, released in 2008. This a VG, little-used ex-library copy, with the pictorial card covers overlaid with clear plastic, front and rear gutters reinforced, lavishly illustrated with b/w photos, some art and maps, four full page colour portrait paintings centrally located, 383 pages including appendix, notes, bibliography and index. Book is VG, marred only by library markings --- barcode lower front cover, small codes label lower spine dealer label lower left front cover verso, cancelled stamp on half-title with library stamp lower corner, library codes label lower left title page verso, no library markings through text block which is excellent, library stamps rear end-papers, small library stamps page edges as closed.

Book
Paperback. The Boxing Day Riot of 1879 when a parade of Orange Lodge members was attacked by a mob of Irish Catholic navvies swinging axe-handles, a slander case involving one of the city's richest merchants, the famous Severed Hand Mystery of 1885 . Following on from his first volume, Christchurch Crimes 1850-1875: SCandal and Skulduggery in Port and Town, historian Geoffrey Rice presents another fascinating collection of Christchurch crimes and scandals drawn from nineteenth-century newspaper court reports, this time covering the later Victorian period from 1876-1899. We meet some of the city's most notoirous citizens of the period, such as the photographer Eden George, and the preacher-fraudster Arthur Bently Worthington, who caused the one and only reading of the Riot Act in Christchurch. The Opawa axe murder of 1897 includes a rare photograph of the body. Magistrates and judges had to deal with a procession of society's law-breakers passing through their courts, from apologetic drunks and brazen prostitutes, shifty forgers and brutal thugs, rapists and arsonists, bigamists and embezzlers to desperate women charged with manslaughter or murder. The defence lawyers were often faced with a difficult task, yet Christchurch in this period had several highly skilled courtroom lawyers who knew how to persuade a jury. The author's easy-to-read story-telling style and genuine enthusiasm for and knowledge of his subject bring to life another rich, colourful and intriguing chapter from the city's past.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+_. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. Photos , Drawings, Tables, Diagrams, Graphs, Document reproductions (illustrator). 2nd Edition. Just as WWI was ending NZ became afflicked by what became known as the "Great Flue". as it expanded to a world-wide pandemic. How the illness was introduced to NZ remains a matter of dispute. When the epidemiic struck in late 1918, the medical resources available were quickly overwhelmed and deaths were later calculated to have reached about 8500, almost 25 per cent were Maori, who died at a higher rate than European NZers. The epidemic evaporated almost as quickly as it arrived, lasting about six weeks. "Black November" was first published in 1988 with this revised and expanded edition adding three new chapters and 50 survivor recollections . The book is one of the most comprehensive and detailed records on the topic, covering every aspect of the ecidemic. This copy a former, little used, library item, with a coding label lower spine, two other labels on end- pspers. Text block is excellent, no intrnal markings. Illustrated throughout with 200 b/w photographs and other images. Covers VG+, photos front and rear. End- papers reproduce newspaer epidemic death notices.
