With five full page plates and one double-page plate in black and white by Maurice Sendak. 8vo, publisher s original gray cloth lettered and decorated in silver, in the original dustjacket featuring artwork by Maurice Sendak. 30 pp. A fine copy of the book, near as pristine but for a bit of mellowing, the dustjacket very nice, essentially as fine with some mellowing to the spine panel. FIRST EDITION. Randall Jarrell completed the manuscript for this work just shortly before his death in 1965 and Sendak, who had collaborated with him previously on THE BAT-POET and on THE ANIMAL FAMILY brought it to publication after creating these illustrations for the book. It is the crown jewel of the Jarrell/Sendak partnership.

Published in the US in 1965, ther year of the poet's death, this is a First Printing of the First UK Edition published a couple years later. In terra cotta boards with bright gilt to spine. Top corners dinged, otherwise quite nice and clean with solid binding. Jacket is uncipped (12s/6d net) with 3/4 inch tear and associated crease/small spot stain to top of front panel. and a few nicks at spine ends. Quite scarce - much more so than the First US Edition. 1st Printing.
