Soft Cover. Condition: New. First Edition. Record of an important exhibition of Buddhist masterpieces spanning India, Central Asia and the Himalayas, Southeast and East Asia, from the 1st century BCE to the 19th century. The sweeping scope of this exhibition allowed the organizers to demonstrate effectively the development, evolution and geographical transmission of the art, in a manner that exhibitions with a more national or parochial focus could not attempt. Objects include sculptures of stone, wood and bronze, as well as ritual objects, mural paintings on plaster and painted banners. Exhibits were drawn from fine private collections as well as institutions. Of particular note are those objects on loan from the Museum fur Indische Kunst, Berlin, the superb holdings of which rarely appear in any publications. Essays on the development and transmission of Buddhist art themes (bilingual English/Chinese) were drawn from a scholarly conference coincident with the exhibition and include papers by such luminaries as Jan Fontein, Steven Little, Helmut Brinker, Krairiksh Piriya and others. Very important reference work. xiv, 378 pp., 153 colour and 39 b&w plates, 5 maps, 18 line drawings and plans, chronology, glossary, bibliography. Size: 30 x 21 cm.

"Papers delivered at a conference held in Singapore at the Asian Civilisations Museum (2008) in conjunction with the special exhibition "On the Nalanda trail: Buddhism in India, China and Southeast Asia"--Title page verso. Recent studies of intra-Asian trade and Buddhist networks have brought fresh perspectives to the understanding of the pre-modern interaction between South and Southeast Asia. Through centuries of selective adaptation and localization of intellectual, cultural, aesthetic, and economic exchanges Buddhist art in Asia has continued to thrive. Fresh research and archaeological data help locate centres of exchange which catalysed the process of localization. This collection of essays, based on a conference held in conjunction with On the Nalanda Trail: Buddhism in India, China and Southeast Asia, an exhibition organized by the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore, is a re-exploration of Buddhist art, archaeology, and epigraphy. Focussing on ancient monastic centres and temples such as Nalanda, Mainamati, Kizil, Kedah, Dulesi, and Longxingsi Dabeige, papers in this volume offer newer perspectives on aspects of text-image-inscription correlation. This volume is an attempt at interdisciplinary study of cross-cultural trails that lead to localized Buddhist practice patterns and artistic diversities.
