Autobiography of Thomas Henry Tibbles (1838-1928), activist for Native American causes, assistant editor of the Omaha Daily Herald, editor-in-chief of The Independent, a weekly Populist newspaper, and Populist Party nominee for Vice-President of the United States in 1904. A witness to the results of Wounded Knee massacre of 1891, Tibbles was one of the first to report the tragedy to the world. Tibbles's wife was Susette ("Bright Eyes") LaFlesche, a member of the Omaha tribe. Includes a new and substantial 32-page Historical Introduction by Francis Paul Prucha, S. J. From the publisher's preface: "Tibbles left home at eleven to go West. He quickly exhibited a deep interest in human rights by actively aligning himself with the antislavery forces that fought to make Kansa a Free State, Later, while homesteading in Nebraska, he became a spokesman for the suffering Nebraska settlers during the terrible grasshopper famine.
