Red linen spine, pictorial paper covered boards, landscape large 4to, pp.56. 18 watercolour drawings reproduced in colour, 24 ink sketches. Originally written and illustrated by Rosamond Praeger ( 1867 - 1954 ) in around 1910 but never published. She was a well known and successful sculptor in Northern Ireland, but also produced 20 childrens books between 1896 and 1918. Several publishers flyers regarding the book loosely inserted, including a short handwritten note from an Audrey Scales at the Portmoon Press to the purchaser of the book. Fine.

Bindings very poor and loose. Ownership inscriptions to ffeps. Unpaginated pages, some blank, with colour illustrations. Creases to some pages, but no other annotations. Readable copies and worth preserving for the lovely pictures. Sophia Rosamond Praeger (17 April 1867 16 April 1954) was an Irish artist, sculptor, illustrator, poet and writer. Praeger wrote and illustrated children's books, as well as providing botanical illustrations for her brother's work. However she is best known for her sculptures, working primarily in plaster but also marble, terracotta and stone. Book size - oblong 8 x 10.25 inches, pp. 45 alternating pages of a coloured illustration and a page of text, bi-fold (french-fold) pages, original grey 'clay paper' endpapers, hardback . Book condition - Good ; contents clean with occasional pages showing slight dustiness, no foxing, no tears, all page edges intact, ink inscription (" John Henry Walker with love from Aunt Kathleen . Christmas 1916 ") on the verso of the front flyleaf, inner hinges have been repaired/strenghened with strips of card , dull coloured but not matching original endpapers, binding firm ; front board with title in black and colour illustration, plain white back board, original blue cloth spine ; corners with some wear but not bent, boards' edges with some chipping, back dusty and with some light marks, back hinge intact, spine complete with some rubbing and creasing at the ends, spine colour just a little faded but clean, front hinge intact, front board again slightly dusty and lightly marked but the title and illustration all complete and clear . Please see the photos for indications of condition and contents. This would appear to be an early second issue as, while the illustrations inside the book conform to those shown in the first edition, the front cover illustration and text differ from those shown as first edtions online. Note that both with this copy and those shown online as firsts the front board title is ". Came Home ." whereas the hafl-title and title pages show it as ". Came Back.". Sophia Rosamond Praeger, ( 1867 1954) was an Irish artist, sculptor, illustrator, poet and writer. (See Wikipedia for a brief biography).

With the small attractive bookplate, showing a bookish owl, of 'Oz' publisher, later media tycoon, Felix Dennis (1947-2014). He was also a distinguished poet, philanthropist, book collector and lover of trees (the Forest of Dennis.) No date, [1919]. Illustrated in colour throughout. Some lightly penciled easily erasable marks on a few pages, back strap missing at spine, some slackening at internal hinges and edgewear, overall, used, worn, good only with clean text and plates.

Boards have noticeable shelf-wear with corner bumping. Slight crushing to spine ends. Markings to both boards with mild scuffing to paper. Book has a slight forward lean. Unclipped jacket, priced 10.6. Jacket has heavy edgewear with areas of loss, heavy tears, chips, and creasing. Visible tanning to spine and edges. Water staining to rear panel. Wear marks overall with faint brown staining.
