A Zionist activist , Benzion Netanyahu (1910-2012) wrote the vigorous and comprehensive seventy page Introduction which prefaces this compilation of writings by renowned Zionist Leo Pinsker, many of which appear here in English for the first time. "Pinsker [1821-1891] occupies a foremost position in the history of the Jewish national movement as a figure who contributed greatly both to the development of its philosophy and its organization. The analysis which he gave to the Jewish question is as true and applicable today as it was when he gave it classic expression in his Auto-Emancipation in 1882. This volume presents Pinsker's Auto-Emancipation as well as selected speeches and letters. They are characterized by a penetrating grasp of the Jewish Question in all its aspects and by a keen insight into the psychological and historic causes of anti-Semitism which, Pinsker believed, could be eradicated only by the elimination of Jewish homelessness.
