Hardcover. xxiv, 231 p.; 19 cm. Text in French, preface and notes in English. -- `Pascal trusted for his demonstration of the truth of religion not so much to logical proof and connected argument, as to an accumulation of probabilities, each of which taken apart might well seem to be inadequate, but which taken together acquire by their mass the force of certainty. It is the method of Newman's Grammar of Assent.' (xii) -- `The lover of Pascal will miss many familiar and beautiful passages which I regard as too intimate, nay too sacred, to find a place in a work whose main purpose was polemical. Such are the Memorial, the "Mystere de Jesus", the confession of Pascal's charity, and assertion of his innocency, his meditation on the waters of Babylon, and so on.' (xviii) [Stewart edited these sections of the Pensees in The heart of Pascal, 1945] Good waterstained green cloth. Text clean and fresh.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Pensees Fragments et Lettres de Blaise Pascal, Publies Pour La Premiere Fois, Par M. Prosper Faugere, Andrieux, Editeur, Paris, 1844, two volume set, full leather, 8vo. In good condition, nicely bound. Bookplate of famous poet John Veitch (more information below). Tome I spine has damage to top, missing segment. Boards corners are rubbed from typical shelf wear. Textblock is typically tanned and has minor foxing. Minor pencil marks throughout. Please see photos. Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Catholic theologian. Our copy of his musings was once owned by John Veitch, Scottish poet, philosopher, historian & son of a Peninsular War veteran. Veitch was assistant lecturer successively to Sir William Hamilton and Alexander Campbell Fraser (1856-1860). Alexander Campbell Fraser was a Scottish theologian, professor and fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was presented to Queen Victoria during her diamond jubilee(1897) tour of Scotland. In 1860 Veitch was appointed to the chair of logic, metaphysics and rhetoric at the Univeristy of St. Andrews. In philosophy an intuitionist, he dismissed the idealist arguments with some abruptness, and thereby lost much of the influence gained by the force of his personal character. COLH1845AGJA.
