This postcard shows one of the trams on the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway in New Hampshire as it carries passengers. A crowd of people watch the tram. Back caption: "The 27-passenger tram car enters the Valley Station completing the mile long trip from the summit of Cannon Mountain in less than seven minutes." The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was the first aerial tramway built in the United States. The concept of the tramway came from Alexander Bright, an Olympic skier. In 1933, Bright made a trip to Europe as a member of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. On his trip, he was inspired by the European tramways and thought the idea could gain traction in the U.S. That same year, surveys were completed of Franconia Notch in New Hampshire by L. R. Batemen, E. J. Lloyd, and Roland E. Peabody. Roland E. Peabody (1896-1950) is also named as the photographer on this postcard, and he became the managing director of the tramway. Cannon Mountain was deemed to be the best place to build a tramway because the least amount of forest would have to be cleared on that route. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was completed in 1938 and remained open until 1980 when another renovated tramway was completed that year.
