A Hard Backed copy with Dust Jacket, both in Fine condition. Large Format. Not Inscribed or price clipped. 125 Pages. Fully illustrated throughout. This beautifully illustrated book is based on the memoirs of Roland Meredith, a widowed London schoolmaster of comfortable means who retired at the end of 1900 and spent his remaining years walking around England for the pleasure of visiting historical sites and admiring the countryside around them. The text is taken from his diary for 1901, the year in which Queen Victoria died and a new era can be said to have begun. The pictures were all painted in the early 1900's by a variety of artists. The era they portray, prosperous and enjoyable as it was for the 'privileged classes', was a short one, for it ended abruptly in 1914 with the outbreak of the First World War. Meredith's journal and the illustrations that accompany it are therefore both a fascinating historical document and a nostalgic record of a lifestyle that was soon to be swept away.
