Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. xiv + 260 pages, well illus, a well-chronicled survey of cricket throughout mainland Europe looking both at the history of the game in different countries as well as the situation in the late 1960s. Authored by a triumvirate of highly regarded sports people, and with a Foreword by Colin Cowdrey, Part One looks at cricket in specific countries or regions (Corfu, the Mediterranean, Rome, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, "the far North" and Eastern Europe); while Part Two looks less geographically at subjects (The Continental Tests; Within the Dark Continent; The Missionaries [early visitors and coaches, for example]; The Emigrants; The Tribes [families, for instance]; The Local Colour; and Future Federation). Appendices, Statistics on cricket in Holland and Denmark; biblio and fascinating acknowledgments; and index. SIGNED on front free end paper by what looks like A van der Toft, semi-identified below as Heineken - this is assumed to be a Heineken manager, given that Heineken was one of the three corporate sponsors of the book. Several marks to cover; some bumping on spine and corner-wear; that stray signature on the ffep; some spotting marks also on ffep; marks on top edge of text block; internally, however, extremely clean. Jacket worn and a little torn at most extremities, esp spine and corners; creasing around front flap; some foxing on inside; not price-clipped.
Interesting history of the development of cricket in continental Europe, with the emphasis on Corfu & Malta, Holland, Denmark, and Germany. 8vo. 260pp. 6 plates, text illust., diags. Dust-wrapper, lightly rubbed to edges. Good condition.
