Hardcover. p.; 22 cm. `I think it was Hurrell Froude--it was at any rate some enthusiastic young Tractarian in the early days of the Oxford Movement--who said, in conversation, to a friend that every word of our Lord was as it were a canon law for the Church. I feel sure that the manner of treating those words inplied in this remark is an entirely mistaken one, and quite uncongenial to the whole method and form of the teaching of Jesus. As a matter of fact, the Christian Church has never thus treated the majority of his sayings. That concerning divorce has indeed sometimes been regarded in this light; the words used in the institution of the Eucharist have been anxiously examined as a lawyer scrutinizes an Act of Parliament. But, for the most part, some of the sayings of Jesus have been treated as `counsels of perfection,' others as `precepts,' some as figurative, others as literal, in accord with the general judgment of the Christian community, which claimed from the time of the Fourth Evangelist onwards to enjoy the guidance of the Spirit of truth in its interpretation of the teaching of the Lord.' (p. 84) Good dull orig. navy cloth. Prior owner's sig. on front endpaper.

Hardcover. xix, 275, [1: corrigenda] p.; 19 cm. Memorialized as `the earnest parish priest' in Dean Burgon's Lives of twelve good men. Sermon I. The state of the faithful departed: `Preparing for this his great change, the good man has been exercising himself to have a conscience void of offence, placing before him the image of his Lord and Saviour, not resting in anything short of a conformity to that blessed example; not habituating himself to the thought of a half-wrought probation, a conflict to be complete hereafter, but bent upon victory here as it is written, He whose hope is in Christ "purifieth himself even as He is pure." Once more, there are who entertain the thought of more than probation, even of a reversal of doom in the unseen world. They claim it in the interests of divine mercy. I have not space to allude even to the arguments wherewith this extreme view is sustained.' (p. 13) -- Sermon III. Conditional immortality: `That a deep veil of mystery hangs over our future is indeed most true; but that the doctrine of a conditional immortality is the light it waited for has not been, and I believe cannot be, shewn. The preceding remarks have gone to shew that there is not evidence in favour of the tenet in question; perhaps further reflection will bring to light much against it, in particular against that form of it which supposes a change after a time in the condition of the lost. But no one imagines the Most High to have in His world these circumstances of imperfection; and a point of time occurring in the middle of eternity--a break in eternity, a line ruled across eternity--is a notion which an educated mind does not entertain.' (p. 42 f.) Fair ex-lib. orig. green cloth, backstrip heavily chipped.
