Stiff printed wrappers. Condition: Near Fine. Noor Ebrahim (illustrator). Reprint. 8vo. Pp. 88. Frontis. Black & white photograph of the author and his family. Illustrated throughout with a mixture of black & white and color photography by Ebrahim. Bound in stiff printed wraps with a photography collage on cover. Inscribed by the author on the title page "To -- and -- with best wishes," dated 21-11-2008. A fascinating memoir of the Cape Town neighborhood before apartheid. In 1966 District Six was declared a whites-only area; by 1982 the neighborhood was leveled. Prior to its demise the area featured a rich tapestry of language, religion, and economic class, composed of freed slaves, small business owners, artists and crafts-people, laborers and professionals - in short, a living example of strength through diversity.Noor Ebrahim tells of Douts, the best curry house in the area, which was frequented by gangsters, what it was like to own a 1964 Hillman Husky, how he and his wife Galema were married in Harvey Street Mosque, and other slices of life that provide a glimpse into a neighborhood utterly demolished.
District Six Museum, 2001. Second edition. 88 pp. Paperback. Illustrated. Inscribed by Noor. Fine condition.
