Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Cutler, Yosel Yosl (illustrator). 1st Edition. In Yiddish. Black cloth with gold lettering and decoration, frontispiece photo of the author, 192 pages., title page illustration and decorative devices on each page by Yosl Cutler. Moishe Nadir (pseudonym of Isaac Reis) was a Yiddish poet and humorist. Born in eastern Galicia, Nadir emigrated to New York at the age of 13 and at 16 began to write lyrics in which he emphasized the hardships of the immigrant generation. His later lyrics were often bitingly satirical. Nadir also published feuilletons, essays, short stories, plays, and criticism in dozens of different Yiddish periodicals and anthologies, as well as dozens of his own books. He coedited the humorous biweekly Der Yidisher Gazlen and was a frequent contributor to Der Groyser Kundes, the most widely read Yiddish humorous periodical of his time. He participated in the literary projects of Di Yunge and aroused interest with his volume of erotic lyrics Vilde Royzn ("Wild Roses, " 1915). His popular poem "Rivington Strit" ("Rivington Street, " 1936), published with the illustrations of Yosl Cutler and William Gropper, was transformed into a performance piece. Active in communist circles, he was hailed by adoring Jewish crowds during a 1926 visit to the Soviet Union, and in his articles in the communist Jewish daily, Frayhayt, he attacked opponents of the Communist Party line. However, severe disillusionment came with the Stalin-Hitler pact of 1939, and his collection of poetry Moyde Ani ("I Confess") , written in 1941 and published posthumously in 1944, includes an autobiographical section in which he repudiated his former beliefs. The pseudonym Nadir ("na dir, " as in "take this" or "take this and choke on it") embodies some of the daring, acid humor of his work in leftist Yiddish publications the Frayhayt, Hamer, and Signal during the 1920s and 30s.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Bogin, Louie (illustrator). In Yiddish. 159, (1) pages. 23 x 16 cm. Author Yitzchak Rayz (1885-1943, better known by his pen name Moyshe Nadir was an American Yiddish language writer and satirist. In 1898, at age of 13, Rayz immigrated to New York and adopted the Americanized name Isaac Reiss. Within a few years his work was published widely in the New York Yiddish press, under a variety of pseudonyms, including Rinnalde Rinaldine, Dilensee Mirkarosh, Der Royzenkavalir, Doctor Hotzikl, and, finally, Moishe Nadir. As a teenager, he wrote for Der Groyser Kundes (The Big Prankster) and later co-edited Der Yiddisher Gazln (The Yiddish Bandit) with Jacob Adler. He wrote for an assortment of Communist Yiddish publications including the Frayhayt (Freedom) newspaper and its successor Morgn Frayhayt (Morning Freedom) and the magazines Der Signal (The Signal) and Der Hammer (The Hammer). When his sharp-tongued theater reviews caused him to be banned from theatrical productions, he resorted to attending plays in disguise. His own plays were performed by Maurice Schwartz s Yiddish Art Theater, Zuni Maude and Yosl Cutlers Modicut puppet theater, Artef (Arbeter Teater Faraband, Workers Theater Alliance) and the Federal Theater Project. Among his better known poems are the erotic Vilde Royzen (Wild Roses, 1915) and his 1932 Rivington Strit (Rivington Street). After a long association with the Frayhayt and the Morgn Frayhayt, Rayz began to distance himself from the Communist cause with the onset of the show trials in the Soviet Union and publicly broke with the Morgn Frayhayt in the wake of the Molotiv-Ribbentrop Pact. He set out his reasons in Di, vos blayben mit der Morgn Frayhayt (Those who stay with the Morgn Frayhayt ) in response to Morgn Frayhayt editor Moissaye Olgin s Di vos gayen avek ( Those who leave ). Rayz discusses his relationship to the Communist Party in his posthumous Moyde Ani.
