Opera in ottime condizioni. --- Seconda di una trilogia di tragedie storiche - dedicate rispettivamente a Napoleone, Cavour e Cesare -, frutto della collaborazione decennale tra il drammaturgo Giovacchino Forzano e Benito Mussolini. "Villafranca" mette in scena gli eventi che portano alla fine della seconda guerra d'indipendenza italiana, dagli incontri tra il re Vittorio Emanuele II e Cavour, all'armistizio di Villafranca. La trilogia costituisce uno degli esempi più significativi del teatro fascista, in quanto la sua ideazione ha comportato la collaborazione del Duce stesso. Tutte e tre le opere sono caratterizzate da chiari intenti propagandistici e, in particolare, celebrano la figura del Duce, a cui sono legate le storie di ciascuno dei protagonisti. Lo stesso Mussolini, attraverso la collaborazione con Forzano, mirava a proporsi come erede spirituale di queste figure storiche eroiche. "Villafranca" fu tradotta in tedesco e rappresentata con successo a Berlino nel 1940, per celebrare l'alleanza tra Italia e Germania.
