Blank before half-title pasted to front pastedown, concealing bookplate. Author's name on spine given as 'Mrs Craik'. Not listed in Peppin & Micklethwait.

First Crowell Edition. an attractive binding; a reprint of the Hurst & Blackett 1856 first edition publication which was a three decker in the 3 volume format; publisher's gray cloth; lettering in gilt on spine and on front cover; art nouveau design in white, green and gilt on spine and front cover; 540 pages; illustrated; hinges tight; top edge gilt; minimal edge rubbing; all 18 full page plates in monochrome, including frontispiece, by illustrator Alice Barber Stephens are present in excellent condition.
