Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Sir John Gilbert; Birket Foster (illustrator). The collected works of humanitarian poet and hymn-writer James Montgomery, with illustrations and commentary A collection of James Montgomery's poetry and hymns, complete with frontispiece and 6 plates of illustrations by Sir John Gilbert and Birket Foster. James Montgomery was a Scottish born hymn writer and poet whose concern for humanitarian causes is reflected in his poetry. Considered politically inflammatory at the time, Montgomery was twice imprisoned for sedition, first in 1795 for printing a poem celebrating the fall of the Bastille, and secondly in 1796 for condemning a magistrate for using force to disperse a political protest in Sheffield. This volume holds the pamphlet of poems Montgomery published whilst in jail, along with many other works including his better known poems, The Wanderer of Switzerland which addressed the French annexation of Switzerland, and The West Indies, a poem on the abolition of the slave trade. Work undated. Dated 1879 using JISC from a copy held at the University of Cambridge, but the National Trust and University of Leeds have dated the book1874 and 1877 respectively. Half calf over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. The rear board has a chip at the bottom, and the hardback is exposed to the fore edge. The front board is lightly rubbed, with some minor wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Foxed to the first and last few pages, otherwise pages fairly clean with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

First Edition
1st printing. 11 leaves (printed recto only). Intratextual b/w illustrations and images. 17-1/2" x 11-1/2" "Most of the writers and artists whose work fills out this inaugural edition of Illuminations would not be considered publishable by professional magazines that make up what has elsewhere been called the Establishment. Many have yet to reach thirty. Most do not, I gather, consider themselves Beat. Many are simply acquaintances with whom I read on the weekly series at the Blue Unicorn coffeehouse in San Francisco. Some of you may be dead, not excluding established artists and editors. We are not. We are all growing. We are intensely alive as people, and hopefully as artists." This the first publication of a 1960s poetry and art magazine of a post- "Beat Generation" San Francisco crowd. Modest wear to folder and papers (some rubbing to edges). Withal, a VG+ example. Leaves housed inside stiff printed folder, Color illustrated printed paper title label to front cover. Sheets of blue and beige.
