With additional information, and confirmation. To which is added, The nun; or, Six months residence in a convent by Rebecca Theresa Reed. London: Printed for the Booksellers, s.d. [1875, date of this edition in the British Library]. Hardback, Good. Blue cloth, bumped to corners and spine with embossed decoration in black and gilt lettering to front and spine. Frontispiece b/w illustration. 384pp., b/w illustrations. Mild tanning to edges of page block. Contents clean and bright. Maria Monk (June 27, 1816 summer of 1849) was a Canadian woman whose book Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk, or, The Hidden Secrets of a Nun s Life in a Convent Exposed (1836) claimed to expose systematic sexual abuse of nuns and infanticide of the resulting children by Catholic priests in her convent in Montreal. The book is considered by scholars to be an anti-Catholic hoax. Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk was published in January 1836. In it, Monk claimed that nuns of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph of the Montreal convent of the Hôtel-Dieu, whom she called "the Black Nuns", were forced to have sex with the priests in the seminary next door. The priests supposedly entered the convent through a secret tunnel. If the sexual union produced a baby, it was baptized and then strangled and dumped into a lime pit in the basement. Uncooperative nuns disappeared. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. All images are of the actual book for sale - no stock images are ever used. Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. undated circa 1870 UK edition printed for the booksellers by John Jones. Green buckram with gilt titles and embossed decoration to front and spine, Heavy foxing to end papers and prelims and title pages age toned. and with fading to edges of all pages. Otherwise clean throughout with secure binding. A very good copy of this work Maria Monk's, now largely credited as being fictitious, account of abuse in a Roman Catholic convent first published in 1836, added to which is included Rebecca Reed's account of her six months living in a Convent which was published a year earlier. Both of these accounts caused a furore throughout America and Canada when published and at the time Monk's book was more popular than Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Hard back binding in dark green cloth covers, gilt lettering to the spine and upper panel. 8vo 7'' x 4¼'' 196 pp. Illustrated with upwards of forty monochrome engravings. This edition not in Sabin. The authorship was attributed to the Rev. J. J. Slocum, and it was published simultaneously in America and England under slightly different titles. The 'London Literary Gazette' in 1851 stated ''that since the first appearance of Maria Monk's 'Disclosures' in 1836, from 200,000 to 250,000 copies have been put in circulation.'' The horrifying scenes it describes allegedly took place at the Hotel Dieu Nunnery at Montreal; these include the illicit relations between nuns and the neighbouring monks; infanticide; torture; murder; etc. Rebinding condition with upper hinge broken and first pages loose, snagging of cloth across spine ends. Member of the P.B.F.A. BIO (Résumé, Memoir).
