The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have edge wear, bumping and rubbing. There is some fading to the cover in spots. "Well established in public favour as a successful author, Mulock took a cottage at Wildwood, North End, Hampstead, and joined an extensive social circle. Her personal attractions were at this period in her life were considerable, and people kindly ascribed to her simple cordiality, staunch friendliness, and thorough goodness of heart. In 1857 she published the work by which she would be principally remembered, John Halifax, Gentleman, a presentation of the ideals of English middle-class life. Mulock's next important work, A Life for a Life (1859) , made more money and was perhaps at the time more widely read than John Halifax. It was followed by Mistress and Maid (1863) and Christian's Mistake (1865) , followed by didactic works such as A Woman's Thoughts about Women and Sermons out of Church. Another collection, entitled The Unkind Word and Other Stories, included a scathing criticism of Benjamin Heath Malkin for overworking his son Thomas, a child prodigy who died at the age of seven." First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Adventures of a Brownie(As Told To My Child) by Miss Mulock was published by A. Flanagan Company, Chicago, in, I'm guessing/estimating, somewhere between 1895-1920! (My guess of 1900 is just that, a guess. It has that look.) Not an ex-library copy, this approximately 4 3/4" X 6 7/8", 262-page, almost certainly over 100-year-old offering is in G+ condition(however old it actually is). There is light browning/yellowing of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages, random, marginal, light foxing on a number of pages throughout, and a brief gift Inscription near the top of the front loose end page. Very modest shelf wear is observed at top and bottom edges of offering's spine as well as at the four outer tips of front and back cover boards(the ORIGINAL BOARDS, I must add). Miss Mulock(Dinah Maria Mulock Craik), 1826-1887, was also the author of such extremely popular(in her day) stories as "The Little Lame Prince" and "John Halifax Gentleman". Seen throughout this delightful collection of six(6) brief tales featuring an impish little Brownie(whose main goal in life, it would seem, is to make the lives of any and all children around him merrier by joining in, or instituting, if necessary, their play time) are some eighteen(18), period, black and white line Drawings, by Artist Unknown, I'm sorry to say. IN ADDITION TO THE BROWNIE STORIES, there are seven(7) more tales to be enjoyed, by kids of all ages: "The Fair One With Golden Locks"; "Little Snowdrop"; "The Juniper Tree"; "The Woodcutter's Daughter"; "The Bluebird"; "The Yellow Dwarf"; and, lastly, "Brother and Sister". Interestingly, these seven stories are not adorned by any illustrations/drawings. NOTE: Should you be a serious collector of the works of Diana Craik/Miss Mulock, and are perhaps seeking a cleaner, firmer, more sound copy of this collection of her stories (actually, if you're still reading, you probably know much, much more concerning the details/aspects of this offering than I ever could), this book may well be of serious interest to you, Reader. Thank you!!.
