"Since the May morning in 1954 when the Supreme Court handed down the decision that segregated public schools were "inherently unequal, many thousands of words have been printed concerning the Negro American, not only about his rights but his aspirations, his needs, and his rights but his aspirations, his needs, and his nature. When, however, Daedalus, the journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, embarked in 1964 on preparations for the two issues on the Negro in America, the lack of any comprehensive bibliographic survey of recent writing on the subject was at once apparent, There was no work of reference that included scholarly studies from many disciplines, together with materials on events in the growing struggle for Negro rights. The present bibliography furnishes such a survey.
