In dem wohl an eine Zeitschrift, einen Verleger oder jemand sonstwie an Details seines künstlerischen Werdegangs interessierten Adressaten gerichteten Schreiben hält der in Wien geborene, einem niederländischen Patriziergeschlecht entstammende Mertens die Stationen seiner schriftstellerischen Laufbahn fest: "Ludwig Mertens, Postoffizial in Salzburg, 38 Jahre alt, Offizier im Feldzuge von 1849, ist beim Staatsministerium um eine Schriftstellerpension eingekommen, um seine ganze Zeit dem Studium und der Dichtung zu widmen. Derselbe hat bereits 4 Werke vollendet, das 'belagerte Wien', großes Epos, woran er 7 Jahre arbeitete, 'König Ottokars Traumspiel, ein episches Gedicht [.]'". - "Mit seinen schriftstellerischen Arbeiten gehörte er dem Kreis der 'Iduna' an und verstand sich getreu ihrem Programm als Bewahrer und Hüter überlieferter Ideale und Kunstauffassungen" (ÖBL VI, zit. n.
