Printed on the occasion of titular travelling exhibition, this work is not only a catalogue. Spanning over four decades, and several continents, with over thirty representative prints, In Black and White presents the chance for many people to see an aspect of Van Vliet's work that isn't as well known. Various mediums were used to illustrate the book. McLean guides the reader through the artist's landscapes of California, Europe, the American Southwest, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and, closer to the artist's home, which is located in Wheeler Mountain, Vermont. Included is an interview with Van Vliet, an introduction that outlines the influence of landscape in her early years, a chronology, and a detailed listing of illustrations. Oblong quarto. 77 pp. Numerous illustrations including lithographs, vitreographs, drawings in charcoal-pencil and ballpoint pen, watercolors, and more. Hand-bound in boards, the front board covered with a proof of an original Claire Van Vliet print (9" x 11") and with exposed spine sewing. Inscribed on the colophon: "For John and Margaret Class." A fine copy housed in publisher's dark gray board slipcase. One of two hundred copies printed at the Stinehour Press in Lunenburg, Vermont. Signed on the colophon by Claire Van Vliet. A trade edition was also published. Claire Van Vliet (b.1933 in Ontario) is a fine artist, illustrator and typographer who founded Janus Press in San Diego, California in 1955. The Janus Press has been based in Newark, Vermont since 1966.
