ABOUT THIS BOOK: An astounding and luxurious facsimile of a rare Victorian gardening guide, bound in cloth with exquisite color illustrations Since its initial publication in 1900, Thomas H. Mawson's book The Art and Craft of Garden Making has become the go-to guide for garden design, with multiple reprints that continue to withstand the test of time. Its chapters address numerous topics essential to successful landscape design, from "The Choice of a Site and Its Treatment" to "Flower Gardens, Beds, and Borders." The book's author, Thomas Hayton Mawson (1861-1933), was a British garden designer, landscape architect and town planner. He began his own landscape firm in the 1880s; he combined his botanical knowledge and eye for architectural details into unique plans for parks throughout Europe, many of which have since been restored to their former floral glory. With great attention to detail and diligent research, Mawson's expertise is apparent throughout the book. This facsimile of the fifth edition of The Art and Craft of Garden Making (1926) preserves both the beauty of the book's original design and the encyclopedic information contained within its pages. Featuring a sumptuous clothbound cover, gold detailing and illustrations, this publication is an art piece in and of itself as much as it is a valuable resource for professional and hobbyist gardeners alike.(Publisher).

Hardcover1. The preface for this fifth edition is dated April 1926, which is the last and best edition, filled with additional material. xii; 440pp. Frontispiece in colour and a few others. Over 500 illustrations and photographs used throughout. A light but long thin damp stain penetrates a few millimetres into early pages from the fore-edge. Also along the bottom edge, but here a little more in places, and with some loss of surface where the pages have been separated. On a 10 pages or so the bottom edge has been torn. Nonetheless a clean bright book internally. Attractive full colour frontispiece. Grey boards with lettering and design in green on front, gilt on spine. Spine ends bumped, with small closed tears. One long scratch mark to rear board. Very good.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 375 pp. with B/W illustrations, plus index and 6 appendices: Deciduous Trees for the Park; Evergreen Trees for the Park; Evergreen Ornamental and Flowering Shrubs for Town Planting; Deciduous Flowering and Ornamental Shrubs for the Town; Trees for Street Planting; Trees and Shrubs for Special Positions and Soils. Although the cover is not in good condition, the book still offers many pleasures that cannot be found in reprints, including the gilt lettering and bust on the front cover, and the thick, creamy paper with crisp illustrations. Water damage at lower corner of front cover and first few pages, and along the outer edge of back cover. However, water damage has not resulted in a musty odour. Extensive edgewear esp. at corner and spine ends including tears as long as 2". Inside back cover is torn along the spine. The frayed tissue between the full-colour frontispiece and the title page has been torn from the binding but is still present. Title page has been signed, presumably by one of the Ruttan family of engineers and architects in Winnipeg. The owner(s) obviously valued the book as a working resource, and its usefulness is reflected in the wear, just as its essential beauty remains untouched. Oversized volume may require additional shipping.
