Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. VG++. Two defects to book. There is a brief gift inscription ("Merry Christmas 1979 / Dad from Betty") inked in a very neat hand to the ffep, with a seasonal sticker alongside. Second, the bottom edges of both boards have some small amounts of a residue of some sort, toward the fore-edge side. It is tempting to guess that the book was at one point shelved on a bookcase that had been recently painted before the paint was completely dry. Aside from these, the book is in Fine condition, with pristine, clean bright pages, a stout sewn-signature binding, and bright gilt to front and spine. DJ is in NF state with only mildest traces of handling and touches of rubbing to head of spine. It is not price-clipped, sing there is no price printed thereto, and untorn. This was an autobiographical manuscript, left unfinished at the author's death in 1953, and posthumously edited and published by his daughter Eva Marshall Douglas. Originally from Vermont, the author concluded his interesting career in machining by being invited, at the age of 60, to join the Astrophysical Instrument Shop at CalTech, working on the Palomar telescope project and becoming, for a time, its official photographer. He was also, not coincidentally, imbued with an extra helping of intellectual curiosity, an abiding love of nature, and a philosophical bent.
