Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Portrait, Two Battle Plans, Document Reproduction, Map (illustrator). 1st. Among the many near forgotten campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars are those in Spain and Portugal (the Peninsular War) in which the then Lieutenant-Colonel Benjamin D'Urban was engaged from 1808 to 1814, when an armistice was signed. He remained on the Peninsular till 1817, when he returned England, being promoted to Major-General in 1819. The war on the Peninsular contributed to the eventual defeat of Napoleon and D'Urban was present at a number of decisive battles, seiges. advances and retreats against the French forces. Throughout this time Sir Benjamin kept a detailed and daily record of his experiences during the long campaign, which personally involved 11 battles and seiges, as well as giving an overview of the Peninsular War. His journals were the basis for this close assessment of that war, its military, political and leadership issues, with I J Roussaeu editing the journals and also providing the introduction. Probably one of the most absorbing first hand accounts of the Peninsular campaigns. First edition from Longmans, Green of 1930, 355 pages including index, b/w art frontis portrait of Sir Benjamin is protected by tissue sheet, two colour coded fold-out battle maps, fold-out map Spain and Portugal, one document reproduction.
