First Edition
Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. This collection of essays was originally planned as a sixtieth-birthday tribute to John Butt, formerly Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature in the University of Edinburgh. The English novel was chosen as the subject in recognition of Professor Butt's long labour towards a new edition of the works of Charles Dickens. Professor Butt knew of the projected tribute, sealed with his approval its list of contributors, and took a lively and amused interest in its progress while he lived. When he did not survive to his sixtieth birthday, it was decided to carry on with the volume at a slower pace and make it the finest possible tribute to his memory. The twenty-three essays cover the range of English fiction from Congreve's early Incognita (1692) to Rayner Heppenstall's The Connecting Door and The Woodshed (1962). The coverage is necessarily .selective, and not every English writer of fiction is represented, but authoritative essays may be found here on Congreve, Defoe, Swift, Fielding, Johnson, Scott, Surtees, Dickens, George Eliot, Hardy, Moore, Conrad, Lawrence, Joyce, Waugh, and Heppenstall, as well as . theoretical discussions of such topics. as "authorial presence" in the novel and the novel's modes of characterization. . At the rear of the book is a list of the published writings of John Butt Size: Octavo (standard book size). 486 pages.
