Lacquer is the resin of a tree which grows in China and Japan. The technique of working the resin is delicate and slow; sometimes as many as 200 or 300 coats may be needed, and infinite patience is required as each layer must dry before the next is applied. The incredible precision of the workmanship is clearly shown in the illustrations in this book. Ref LLL 1.
