Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover. White illustrated paper-covered boards of two rabbits, with blue lettering on the front cover. Corners are mildly bumped. Five holes are present on front cover, seemingly from an overexcited child with a pencil. Very, very faint indentations from them to the first few pages. Title and copyright pages dated 1943, stated second printing. One very faint tideline along edge of first page; pages otherwise are clean and tidy, with handsome illustrations by Ralph Douglass throughout. Binding is sturdy. The Mesaland Series was the first children s book series issued by UNM Press; it was the first children s book series issued by a university press in the United States. To contemporary eyes, the books, each of which focuses on a different wild New Mexico animal, are beautiful objects. Playfully & Beautifully illustrated by Ralph Douglass, who was an acclaimed political cartoonist for the Chicago Daily News. He and the author, Loyd Tireman, a pioneer in bilingual and community education, were both on the UNM faculty and collaborated to create this series along with Bernallo, New Mexico storyteller Evelyn Yrisarri; who was a member of the National Storyteller s League of Washington, DC. and adapted the folktales for this series, It measures 6" by 8" with little shelfwear and the bumble bee pictorial cover in good condition with a few spot stains as well as good interior with some discoloration in a few spots. A rare original 1st edition in this series which was reissued in 2015 Size: 6 " By 8".
