First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 278pp. Foreword by Irvin S. Cobb. Illustrated from photographs, frontispiece portrait. Decorated rust cloth. Some soiling, a little wear at the extremities, still very good, lacking the dustwrapper. One of 20th Century American literature's great hucksters, Long Lance was actually Sylvester Long from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, born with Indian, Caucasian, and African-American blood. He passed himself off for years as the Blackfoot chief presented in this "autobiography." Not in Thornton.

First cheap edition, second printing. First published by Faber & Gwyer in 1928. Small 8vo. Foreword by Irvin S. Cobb. Price of 3/6 intact in lower right corner of front inside flap, that corner is trimmed, presumably to remove the 7/6 price of the full-priced edition, Attractive binding of blue cloth with red stamping, dust jacket spine little frayed at top of spine panel. Photographic plates. Colorful dust jacket entirely different from that of the 1956 Faber reprint. The Blackfoot lived in the United States and Canada, and much of the book concerns the pressures they came under from the Canadian government. The close of the book is a description of the manhunt of Almighty Voice. Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance was actually an African-American, born Sylvester Clark Long in North Carolina in 1890. In early life he assumed a Native American identify, passing himself off as half-Cherokee. On settling in Canada, he began a journalistic career. As a journalist in Albert and Manitoba, Blackfoot territory, he became well acquainted with the Blackfoot and Cree and repressive Canadian policy toward First Nation people, finally assuming a fraudulent Blackfoot identity. He achieved celebrity status under this false identity with the publication of this book.

Reissue (first published 1928). Octavo. Blue cloth hardcover; dustjacket; 241pp; illus. Spots of fading to cloth at spine ends, else Fine. In the original dustwrapper, price-clipped, else bright and crisp, Near Fine. One of the more noteworthy (and tragic) literary hoaxes of the 20th century. "Chief Long Lance," who achieved celebrity through this autobiography recounting his Cherokee boyhood in Oklahoma, was in fact an African-American man named Sylvester Clark Long, born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1932, with his identity in danger of being exposed, Long committed suicide in a Los Angeles mansion. Originally published in both the U.S. and England in 1928; this is a nice copy of the atrractive 1956 Faber reissue.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good (Plus). Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1928. "Long Lance" was born Sylvester Clark Long (1890-1932) and worked as a journalist, actor, and advocate for Native American rights. During his life he claimed native ancestry through several different tribes, including the Cherokee and Blackfoot. Because his story changed often, he became to be considered a sort of fraud, but the real story may be more complicated than that judgement allowed. Whatever the truth, his biography here is a delightful read and was very popular. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Brick red cloth binding with titling in black on the spine and front cover; representation of two tipis on the front. Clean text; xv, 278 pages. Frontis illustration, with ten others within. The forward is by Irvin S. Cobb, a journalist advocate who seems to have become disillusioned later. Bumping to two corners, with a touch of rub to the head and foot of the spine. The rather attractive dustjacket is unclipped, lightly worn at the tips, with a chip at the head of the spine. In an archival plastic protector. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
