Manuscript in ink, 4to (228 x 185mm), in French, two pages, written in a large round hand, endorsed at head of recto 'exped. 17 April 1739'. In fine condition. A most attractive letter from Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales (1707-51), eldest son of George II, announcing the birth of his son. Writing in French to 'Monsieur mon Frere et Oncle', whom he addresses as 'Vôtre Mté', he tells his correspondent that the princess 'est accoûchée Mecredi. d'un fils'. The prince's correspondent is almost certainly Frederick William I of Prussia, who was to die the following year. The Prussian King was indeed the prince's uncle, having married George II's only sibling Sophia; and I think we must assume that addressing him as 'frere' merely signified brotherhood in monarchy. The letter is presumably written in French because that was the language of diplomacy - Prince Frederick himself must have been fluent in German, as he spent the first two decades of his life in Hanover. Frederick William I of Prussia (1688-1740) was a strong and effective monarch, but a brutal father to his eldest son, who became known as Frederick the Great (1712-86). The boy whose birth is announced in this letter was Prince Edward Augustus (1739-67), Frederick's second son, born just ten months after the future George III. Edward was to become a strange mixture, blending pleasure-seeking with attention to his public duties, yet ignoring many of his elder brother's commands when it suited him. He died in Monaco in the autumn of 1767, unmarried.
