Peoples of the Cowichan Indian band lived in this region of off-shore British Columbia long before the arrival of the first European settlers in 1854 (approx.). Many of the earliest settlers (families like: Rollo, Silva, Elgie, Gray, Edgar, Degnen, Hoggan, etc.) were of English , Scottish, Irish or Welsh extraction - as miners they came to the coal fields of Nanaimo. On the island they established farms, logging operations, quarries, and shipping industries. Many worked at the Brickyard in Nanaimo. Mutton from the island was MUCH reputed. Community history complemented by b/w photos. One map. Cond: Paper wrapper is golden yellow with a drawing of two men (pioneers) and a horse cart. 288 pages incl. BIBLIO. Minor rubs, spine fine. No tears, folds, stains, nor marks. Tight and, bright. Names of two previous owners on title page. Almost giftable ! ! Quote (p. 79) :" We made the point and were about half way back when we saw a big school of whales coming down on us. Mother and Father saw them and were sure we would be killed, and they were helpless. We had the old-fashioned aprons ._._. always made them strong.
