Manuscript / Paper Collectible
No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original black-and-white photo postcard. Circa 1915. Postmarked August 6, 1915 (or 1916) in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Postmark year is partially obscured. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. "F. H. Leslie, Limited, Niagara Falls" printed on the back. A red, two-cent King George V stamp is tipped in on the back. Postcard is used. Postcard is very clean and intact except for slight surface wear. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows the steamer, Maid of the Mist, on a boating tour of the same name. The Maid of the Mist boat tour features a round trip from the United States and back, briefly crossing into Ontario, to view Niagara Falls. On the postcard, the Ontario flag is visible at the boat's prow; the American flag at the stern. The first Maid of the Mist offered a ferry service between the U.S. and Canada and began its run in 1846. Following the construction of a suspension bridge between the U.S. and Canada in1848, the owners of Maid of the Mist diverted its service to sightseeing tours. The Maid of the Mist boat tour is still available to this day. There is handwriting in black ink on the back. Margaret addresses Fred Thibodeau and May (Thibodeau?) in Sterling, Colorado. Margaret writes, "Dear Fred & May, The Falls are to me very wonderful. [Am west?] on the Canadian side - Lots of Love, Margaret." Frank Howard Leslie (1876-1969) was a printer and distributor of postcards. He began his career as a teacher. He later became a principal before venturing into the publishing industry. When he became a publisher, Leslie purchased several local newspapers including the Tavistock Gazette, the Niagara Falls Review, and the Niagara Falls Record. Leslie eventually shifted his career toward the publication of postcards. He also took some of the photographs featured on the postcards after the photographer he worked with, Maurice Gonder, passed away.

They say that London was "[n]ot much different from an old American town." This postcard shows a group of people on a balcony overlooking the fish pool and courtyard at the Oakes Garden Theatre in Niagara Falls, Canada. Oakes Garden Theatre is an amphitheater that opened in 1937 at the north end of Queen Victoria Park. The land upon which the amphitheater is built was donated by Sir Harry Oakes, 1st Baronet (1874-1943), a mine owner, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, to the Niagara Parks Commission in 1936. The landscape architecture of Oakes Garden Theatre was designed by Howard and Lorrie Dunington-Grubb. The building architecture was designed by William Lyon Somerville. Florence Wyle, Frances Loring, and Elizabeth Wyn Wood made the sculptures. Frank Howard Leslie (1876-1969) was a Canadian printer and distributor of postcards, educator, and entrepreneur. He began his career as a teacher and principal. He later purchased local newspaper companies including the Tavistock Gazette, the Niagara Falls Review, the Niagara Falls Record, and the Evening Review.
