Book
Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Vols. 3 and 4 (of originally a 4 vol. set), these two volumes in ONE book, printed in Ireland in 1793, is in Poor condition, being in appalling shape: cover leather is practically all-eaten away by ancient silverfish, and those hellish creatures have long ago bored into the spine leaving a deep depression; portion of the top spine is gone (see our photo); front cover literally hangs by a thread; former bookplate of one of the famous O'Grady's of Kilballyowen, pasted to front fixed endpaper (now beginning to pull away slightly); former O'Grady owner has signed their name in fountain-ink on the title page; interior pages all present, although the bound-side does show the effects of ancient silverfish in places. A glorious ruin of a book, demonstrating what time and unfortunate circumstance can bring. This appears to be the famous Tobias Smollett English translation, and the publisher has mis-identified T. Smollett as Thomas Smollett. Again this is only the last two volumes (bound as one) of the set. Only one illustration: the frontispiece. Fiction. French. Novel. Classics. DB.
