Hardback. Condition: Fine. Reprint. THE MINT A day-book of the R.A.F. Depot between August and December 1922 with later notes by 352087 A/c Ross T. E. Lawrence. Jonathan Cape, London 1955 reprint of the first open edition. 206pp Hardback. This copy is bound in blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and a stylised RAF eagle embossed to the upper board. The text block is unmarked, bright, white, tight and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is a trifle dusty commensurate with a sixty year old book, there is also a small closed tear to the rear panel it has now been covered in clear, removable, protective film. The Mint is a book written by T. E. Lawrence, 'Lawrence of Arabia', and published posthumously. It describes his time in the Royal Air Force, working, despite having held senior rank in the army (Colonel), as an ordinary Aircraftman, under an assumed name, 352087 Ross. The book is notable, despite flaws noted by critics, for its sharp observation, for the insight it gives into Lawrence himself, and for the censorship issues around its publication. Ref H 6.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. London: Jonathan Cape, 1955, First Edition. Original blue cloth boards, with some whitening to the bottom of the front and rear boards. Tanned paste downs and end papers, with a signatue to the half title. Dust jacket edge worn with tanned spine and some loss, 2 inch split half way down the dj spine joint folds. Lawrence made his way into the service on two occasions by using adopted names. In August 1927, writing from Karachi, he told Edward Garnett that he had arranged notes in sections and was copying them as a Christmas gift to Garnett. Lawrence told Garnett that he wrote the book tightly, "because our clothes are so tight, and our lives so tight in the service. There is no freedom of conduct at all." The typescript, made at Garnett s order from the actual manuscript, was revised by Lawrence just before his death and it is that text which the present work follows. Lawrence had intended to print a limited edition himself on a hand-press and had already procured enough copies for its frontispiece of a reproduction of a portrait drawing by Augustus John before his untimely death in a motoring accident. The present limited edition is then, the only one available and most closely followed T.E.L s wishes according to his brother A.W. Lawrence. 206pp Approximately 10 inches tall.
