She has conducted extensive research on the use of ayahuasca, a traditional spiritual medicine in ceremonies among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest. Labate has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. Her main areas of interest include the study of substance use, drug policy, shamanism, ritual, and religion. She is author, co-author, and co-editor of seventeen books, one special-edition journal, and several peer-reviewed articles. She was a Research Associate at the Institute of Medical Psychology, Heidelberg University, and Adjunct Faculty at the East-West Psychology Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. She is also co-founder of the Interdisciplinary Group for Psychoactive Studies (NEIP) in Brazil. Her work has become a significant reference in the fields of Anthropology and Psychopharmacology, especially concerning the cultural and social aspects of ayahuasca use.
