Charged with complicity, Antonov was put on trial together with two other Bulgarians and three Turks, including Grey Wolves member Mehmet Ali Agca, who would name Sergei his co-conspirator. Lacking enough evidence against the Bulgarian Secret Service's claimed hiring of the men to carry on the assassination, Antonov was acquited in 1986. Pope John Paul himself rejected the alleged Bulgarian connection.
