Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Fabulous association copy, with an inscription and ALS by Lunar planning scientist Farouk El-Baz to NASA astronaut Jack Swigert. Volume has green cloth boards with gilt lettering on front and spine; includes a set of stereoscopic viewing glasses housed in a small pocket on the rear pastedown. Inscription on title page reads: "To Jack Swigert, with recognition of your invaluable contributions to lunar exploration. Farouk El-Baz." ALS is on an 8 ½" x 11" sheet, is signed by El-Baz and dated to 6/5/1970. He writes "Dear Jack Please accept this book as a token of my gratitude for your time and sincere efforts to get us more and better lunar photography on Apollo 13. I am looking forward to working with you again on your next assignment. Sincerely, Farouk." Volume has light wear to edges, otherwise clean; ALS is clean. The volume includes a selection of Lunar Orbiter program photographs which illustrate the "salient features" of the lunar surface. The program's primary objective was to provide information for a successful manned Apollo lunar landing. There were 5 spacecraft launched for this mission between 1966 and 1967. "Farouk El-Baz was a scientist who worked with NASA to assist in the planning of scientific exploration of the Moon, including the selection of landing sites for the Apollo missions and the training of astronauts in lunar observations and photography. From 1967 to 1972, El-Baz participated in the Apollo Program as Supervisor of Lunar Science Planning at Bellcomm Inc." (Boston University). Jack Swigert, to whom this book was presented, was an astronaut on the Apollo 13 mission, assigned to the mission just three days before launch. With wonderful association this volume and letter set is truly unique. ; B & W Photographs; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 152 pp; Signed by Author.
