Condition: Sehr gut. Umschlag berieben, papierbedingt gebräunt. - Remotivating The Mental Patient supports more hopeful attitudes toward the mentally ill and makes important additions to our knowledge about the treatment of the chronic mental patient. Material for the study was obtained during a fourteen-month national survey of 30 mental hospitals. Programs examined included courageous and promising attempts in large state hospitals to improve social and environmental aspects of patient care, despite generally adverse conditions, in the belief that patients will reflect the improvement. This belief in social remotivation was confirmed by the results in such experiments as elimination of all signs of restraint; encouragement of interest and pride in the patient's personal appearance; transformation of his environment into a more normal atmosphere; promotion of a family spirit with increased social and recreational activity; development of a more "hopeful" staff attitude toward the situation; utilization of the idea that the sick can help the sicker toward more mature social interaction; inclusion of all ward personnel and related groups in the treatment team, with aides sharing in the responsibility for patient care and improvement. One of the important findings of the book is that in spite of crowded conditions and inadequate numbers of physicians, nurses, and aides, encouraging programs of ward care can be developed.
