First edition.In nineteenth century Japan, popular actors in Kabuki theatre were depicted in woodcuts by artists who printed their portraits and pictured their exploits for the delight of their fans. A group of artists in Osaka were chiefly responsible for most of the Kabuki prints that exist today. A major exhibition of these prints was shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1973.
