Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. For many years following the colonisation of Australia , efforts were made to establish a settlement in the Northern Territory (then part of South Australia (SA). However, all failed up to the mid-1800s. At the end of 1868 an expedition, arranged by SA to survey a site for a permant town, located more than 2000 miles to the north of the capital. Adelaide, with no over-land link between. Leading the large expedition, and charged with surveying 500,000 acres in the Territory in six months, was Gerorge Woodroffe Goyder. A sea voyage half way round Australia took the party north. Late the following year Goyder was back in SA; objective achieved, despite the forebodings of the vocal skeptics. It was Goyder's grand-daughter who compiled this excellent biography of the expedition leader and an account of its experiences in the "founding of Darwin." This venture involved the party experiencing dreadful and primintive conditions in a tropical environment while carrying out the survey --- including fevers and scurvy, extreme isolation and under constant threat from hostile natives. The history of Australian exploration and settlement has benefitted greatly from the telling of this previously little-known story. First edition of 1971, 183 pages, including appendix listing expedition members and index, 27 b/w photos, including portraits, colour tone e/paper maps, Red hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, text block NF, no inscriptions. Colour art DJ is VG+.
