[From Preface] This book has been written with the syllabuses for Electricity and, Magnetism the Ministry of Transport Masters and Mates examinations in mind and, for these, the subject matter will be found to be adequate. The basic ideas have been explained and very fully illustrated so as to be easily followed by the reader to whom this is a new subject. In the more advanced work only the general principles have been brought out. These are generally simple although the circuitry necessary to put them into practice is often extremely complicated and no attempt is made to discuss this. Many of those now at sea did not require electrical knowledge when taking their examinations. It is hoped that this book will enable them and others, to understand the principles of the electrical and electronic devices now being fitted in various departments aboard ship.

In good condition with a 1" slit to the bottom of the spine of the paper covers running up toward the bottom staple and light creasing to edges and corners of covers as well. light overall scuffing, aging and soiling to covers as well. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. [From Preface] This book has been written for the use of Merchant Navy officers as a preparation for the various grades of Ministry of Transport Certificates. The sketches have been specially drawn with the syllabuses for these examinations in mind, and the notes have been made as concise as possible. Although we believe we have covered the minimum requirements adequately, we have made no attempt to be exhaustive, and the student should supplement his reading by observation and sketching of parts of his own ship. In many cases, arrangements other than those shown are possible, but to keep our book to a useful size we have avoided the inclusion of too many alternatives.

"The procedures involved in the engagement, discharge and employment of ships' crews as well as the formalities at the Custom House when entering and leaving port are familiar to shipmasters, as to them these are practical matters. The issuing of the various certificates, insurance and chartering may not be so well understood, whilst to those not in command the whole subject of Shipping Business seems to call for theoretical knowledge." This book aims to follow the progress of a ship from the time of first ordering from the builder to the completion of a voyage.
