x + 316pp, 15 illus, 2 maps, decorated cloth. Publisher: The story of the steamships which made the trip from New York to San Francisco and other Pacific ports by the way of Panama. One group of ships travelled down the Atlantic coast, and the other came up along the Pacific side, the journey between the two being made by rail. For passengers and light cargo the Panama was the quickest route. The heavier freight and some passengers went by clippers around the Horn. Kemble's is a classic work on the subject and long been in demand.
