Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. A traditional ritual dance, now on the verge of extinction, Poorakkali is performed during the nine day Pooram (spring) festival in Bhagavati temples of the Malabar region in Kerala. Meant to propitiate Kamadeva (the god of love), the dance is performed exclusively by a group of young men in loin clothes. There are no singes, but the dancers themselves sing and keep rhythm by movements of foot and clapping hands. The songs have mythological basis. Maruthukali is a follow up of Poorakkali performance that includes scholarly discussion on grammar, literature, and mythology by two eminent Poorakkali artists. With a comprehensive scholarly introduction, Professor Kurup describes almost every aspect of Poorakkali and Maruthukali. (jacket).

Trivandrum (India), Kerala Historical Society, 1977, (10),II,(4),67 pag.,13 b/w photographic plates, printed by St. Joseph's Press (Trivandrum), original green cloth with dustjacket. = Rare study presenting an analysis of the festival organised every twenty-five years at the Kalakam of Ramavilliam, Trikkarippur. This Kalakam is an old socio-religious organsiation of Tiya community in North Malabar. A large number of Teyyam deities are propitiated during the festival. A study of these folk gods and goddesses highlights the existence of two different cultural currents of primitivism and sophisticated religion. A case study of the fetsival and the organisation of the Kalakam provides a good example of the process of Aryanisation in the Dravidian land of Kerala.
