Book
Soft Covers. Condition: NF. Photos (illustrator). 1st. In any military activity the logistics of supply and demand of the forces involved is, and always has been. a pivotal considerastion. The sub-title to this book "A History of the Royal New Zealand Corps of Transport and its predecessors 1860-1996" sum up the content, which embraces the supply and logistics requirement of NZ forces operating from the Land Wars of thr 1860s, through two world wars and the combat and peace keeping operations since the end of WWII. Introductory notes advise that it is "not just a matter of rations and camp ovens. but the whole concept of mobility and good housekeeping on a huge scale." It was also "a tribute to the many thousands of ordinary New Zealanders who, with less credit than they deserve, have played an essential part in the long history of the New Zealand Army." The narrative follows a generally chronological pattern taking the land-based transport operation from the horse, waggon and (occasionally) camel days through the introduction of motorised vehicles to airdropped supplies. Naturally, the two worrld wars occupy the bulk of Julia Millen's comprehensive history with other campaigns reciveing due attention, as do the numerous changes in military designation leading to the official formation of the Royal New Zealand Army Service Corps in 1946, the Royal prefix awarded for distinguished service in WWII This title was amended to the Royal New Zealand Corps of Transport in 1979. This is a valuable addition to NZ's military histories and one focusing attention on a less publicised, but vital component of the NZ military establishment. First edition of 1997 from Victoria University Press, 472 pages including eight appendices, ((one a nine page double column roll of honour), notes, bibliography and index, lavishly illustrated with b./w photographs. Colour pictorial card covers are NF. as is the text block. No inscriptions. A heavy book, just over 1kg unpacked, could require additional postage for overseas delivery.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. A very clean copy. For ten years from 1946 to 1955, ground crews moved systematically through the native forests, describing, measuring and recording the forest structure and timber volumes as they went. They carried food for a week or longer, fly camped under often atrocious conditions, coped with rugged terrain, and cursed the ever present scourge of mosquitos. Their comradeship under adversity was a remarkable phenomenon that has lasted to this day. The survey showed that the native forest resources were inadequate to sustain the country's long term timber needs, providing further impetus for New Zealand to convert to exotic plantation timber as rapidly as possible. It also formed the basis for a forest classification system that led on to the production of type maps that were a basic necessity form many purposes, including ecological studie and conservation of the natural forests. This book touches on all aspects of the National Forest Survey, ranging from high level policy decisions, to imaginative management solutions, to stories of the resourcefulness and humour of those who did the field work ."--Foreword.
