Hardcover. Condition: Poor. The Massachusetts Harmony Being a New Collection of Psalm Tunes, Fuges and Anthems, selected from the most approved Authors, Ancient and Modern. By a Lover of Harmony Boston. Printed for and sold by John Norman, at his shop in Marshall's Lane, near the Boston Stone; where may be had a new Collection of Tunes suitable to bind up with Watt's Psalms and Hymns; also, the British Grammar, French Grammar, Spelling Books,Psalters, Primers, &c. Unpaginated Index, Preface, then 95 numbered pages (the first half of which are missing or damaged). Measures 5 inches tall and 10 inches wide. Bound in full leather, likely the original binding. The first half of the book is much damaged, missing some or all of pages 1-39. Of those 20 leaves, only 4 are present, and those are chipped and bent. The other 16 leaves are torn out and missing. Pages 40-81, 84-95 are all present and complete. The single leaf with pages 82/83 is missing. Each page has musical staves, with notes and lyrics to songs of the day. The endpapers, title page, and a few other spots have early ownership writing. Front attached endpaper has the name "Hanson Dell" and two others, harder to read "David --- of 1787" and "John Co-ll." Front free endpaper: Moses Dole's Book. 1784 David Gros in C Che-t-r Hanson Libby's Book Bought December the 3 1786 John J-- ----ers Book Moses Doles Upside down on the back of the front free endpaper: Cow taken September Title page: Moses Dole's Book. 1784 On the margin of page 72: Heson Libby 1789 January 22 Rear free endpaper: Hanson Libby's Book Bought D December Scarborough Searches for the people whose names are in this book are far from complete. There was a Hanson Libby born in Scarborough MA (now Maine) in 1766. Married Abigail Myrick in 1788. Settled at White Rock on the farm known as the David Swett place. Died 1796. The pages are much thumbed and worn, but are clearly printed and all that is here is a marvel of early American printing. According several Library websites: Attributed to William Billings or Andrew Law. Frank Metcalf, in 'American Writers and Compilers of Sacred Music,' says that it's unlikely that it was Billings, because the Billings works are not attributed to him, which he surely would have done if he'd been the editor. According to Earl Kroeger, in his article "Two Unknown Billings Compositions in John Noman's The Massachusetts Harmony," much of the content was pirated from Andrew Law's "Select Harmony" (printed in 1779 and 1782). Kroeger believes that the publisher John Norman was likely the editor of this volume. Of the 2 Billings compositions mentioned in the title of his article, only Paria (page 87) is present in this copy. The other, Effingham," is on a page that is missing. Advertised as 'Just Published' in the Boston Gazette, Oct 25, 1784. Please email with questions, to request photos, or to request a version of the description with page-breaks for easier reading.
