Published in 1898 by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. in the "Pamphlet Library" , which, was edited by Arthur Waugh. This is the First Edition. The book has an Introduction and notes. The following is excerpted from the "Prefatory Note to the Pamphlet Library" by Mr. Waugh : "The object is to set before readers who are interested in the literary and constitutional history of our country [England] the text of those pamphlets or tractates which, besides possessing the only saving qualities of distinction and style, have also exercised a striking influence upon the current of events. At present five volumes are in contemplation, dealing respectively with pamphlets of political, literary, Religious, and dramatic significance, and the editors have regulated their choices primarily by two considerations. Each pamphlet, it has been held, should have high literary qualities, and should also mark a distinct change or development of taste or standpoint. Text-block is rough-trimmed. ***************************************** CONDITION - NEAR VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that remains solid and clean, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are frayed and compressed (hence the condition grade); fore-edge corner tips are softly bumped, with attendant small fraying; bottom edges of boards are mildly shelf-worn; front board is bright with strong color; rear board a bit dulled with various minutes spots and dents (else clean) ; text-block edges are toned, else clean. Lettering still bright. BINDING : Opens easily - a bit of splitting to hinges at a few spots (exposing mull, thread, etc. But the whole seems solid and there are no detached or loose leaves. INTERIOR : Two minute spots of red ink can be seen at the top fore-edge corner of the front free end-paper and paste-down; end-papers also display mild f.
