Paper Back. Condition: New. A re-titling of Newman's famous Letter to the Duke of Norfolk, one of his acknowledged masterpieces. The occasion of the Letter was defense of the 1870 doctrine of papal infallibility, criticized by Newman's fellow Englishmen for its potential negative 'bearing on civil allegiance.' But Newman challenges critics of Rome to consider not transient politics, but supernatural reality. Jaki, the brilliant introducer of this edition (and as close to a contemporary Ultramontaine as there is) tells us there is much in the Letter to help us understand Newman the polemicist, 'the champion of the supernatural as revealed and given concretely in the Roman Catholic Church.' In Newman's words, 'we must take things as they are; to believe in a Church is to believe in the Pope.' Many during his time (as always) relied on stereotypes and sensationalism to promote anti-Roman sentiment; Newman counters with dogmatic, yet gentlemanly, wit. Whether pro- or anti-papal infallibility, here is the substance of the issue that must be engaged. 188 pp.

Paper Back. Condition: New. In 1850, John Henry Newman delivered a series of 'Twelve Lectures on Difficulties Felt by Anglicans in Submitting to the Catholic Church,' which address his concern that Anglicanism, self-satisfied, was abandoning its 'image.as a via media between Protestantism and Romanism.' Newman said of these lectures in his characteristically sardonic tone, 'I am perplexed-either some of them will be most impressively dull, or they will be too much on the other track.' This book (the lectures in manuscript) is anything but dull. On the contrary, it 'may emerge as the prophetic book penned by Newman,' in which he addresses ecumenical concerns that have only become more pressing in our century. In his introduction, Stanley Jaki points to a 'most painful logic at work in ecumenism' which Newman spoke out against. Lectures 1-7 consider the 'full measure of the non-Catholicity of the Anglican Church.' Lectures 8-12 consider problems with Rome, proposing that there are 'no real barriers on the road to it as the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.' Whatever the reader's attitude toward Newman, here is a rare mine of original source material-a window into Newman's spiritual and intellectual pilgrimage-with which to wrestle or embrace. 287 pp.
