This limited edition, #1179 of 1500 copies is signed by the illustrator Gustave Nebel at the colophon. Originally published in 1878, "Daisy Miller: A Study" brought its author international fame. The plot centers around a Europeanized American man named Winterbourne, who meets a nouveau riche American woman going by the name Daisy Miller. A short novel, James wields the sword of fiction to craft a "study" of the roles of men and women, social relationships, cultural intersection, the allure of money, foolishness and wisdom, the responsibilities of parents, and the impact of one's life upon others. This volume is splendidly illustrated throughout by Gustave Nebel. Binding with sunning to spine. Slipcase and binding in very good+, interior in near fine to fine condition overall.

Henry James (1843-1916) was an American author who wrote in the genre of both literary realism and modernism and is best known for his novels "Portrait of a Lady" and "The Ambassadors"; his works examine the often inscrutable relationships between characters. "Daisy Miller" is a novella that deals with both the interior motives of the characters' psyches and the outward traditions and prejudices encountered in society. This publication by The Limited Editions Club contains illustrations by French artist Gustave Nebel (1904-1988), whose watercolours are elegantly reproduced throughout the volume. ___DESCRIPTION: Full red leather, gilt initials on the front board, four raised bands on the spine, gilt ruled borders, lettering, and ornaments on the spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers in red, green, and yellow, frontispiece a watercolour by Gustave Nebel, title page in yellow-green and black with yellow-green decorative border, watercolours by Nebel throughout; monotype Joanna type, Hale's cream-white antique paper, duodecimo size (7.25" by 5"), pagination: [i-iv] v-xvi [xvii-xviii] 1-92 [93] [1 colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 351, signed by Gustave Nebel on the colophon. Loosely laid in is an announcement for the book, one sheet, and the prospectus, one sheet folded once. In a slipcase covered in maroon-coloured smooth material. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The announcement and prospectus are near fine, clean overall with some soiling to the creases, the announcement with a horizontal crease, the prospectus with both a horizontal and vertical crease, else fine.
