" A multifaceted portrait of the early American republic as examined through the lens of the Burr Conspiracy explores the political and cultural forces that influenced public perception and how in spite of vague and conflicting evidence, the former Vice President was arrested and tried for treason. --Publisher. "In 1805 and 1806, Aaron Burr, former vice president of the newly formed American republic, traveled through the Trans-Appalachian West gathering support for a mysterious enterprise, for which he was arrested and tried for treason in 1807. This book explores the political and cultural forces that shaped how Americans made sense of the uncertain rumors and reports about Burr's intentions and movements, and examines what the resulting crisis reveals about their anxieties concerning the new nation's fragile union and uncertain republic. Burr was said to have enticed some people with plans to liberate Spanish Mexico, others with promises of land in the Orleans Territory, still others with talk of building a new empire beyond the Appalachian Mountains. The Burr Conspiracy was a cause célèbre of the early republic--with Burr cast as the chief villain of the Founding Fathers--even as the evidence against him was vague and conflicting. Rather than trying to discover the real intentions of Burr or his accusers--Thomas Jefferson foremost among them--James E. Lewis Jr. looks at how differing understandings of the Burr Conspiracy were shaped by everything from partisan politics and biased newspapers to notions of honor and gentility. He also traces the enduring legacy of the stories that were told and accepted during this moment of uncertainty. [This book] offers a panoramic and multifaceted portrait of the United States at a time when it was far from clear to its people how long it would last.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 232, xxv pp. ; illustrated, 19 photographic plates, 3 in color ; 21 cm. ; John Horace McFarland (1859-1948) was an American master printer and horticulturist. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. Original Printed Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Walter Huber, Fred Herz, T.J. Hellman, Inez Mexia, William E. Colby, Joseph Dixon, H.P. Rankin, Frank H. Lewis, Philip S. Carlton, William H. Wright, Lee L. Stopple, Quong Jue, R.L. van Oosting (illustrator). First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1925. First Edition. Vol XII, No. 2, for 1925. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year- monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 102 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a plate fold-out with two panoramic wide angles, from Mount Hamilton, by William H. Wright. Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). One notable rear-cover chip at top, about 1" x 1.5". Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others. In addition to a serious passel of photos by Walter Huber and Fred Herz, there are photo contributions by T.J. Hellman, Inez Mexia, William E. Colby, Joseph Dixon, H.P. Rankin, Frank H. Lewis, Philip S. Carlton, William H. Wright, Lee L. Stopple, Quong Jue, R.L. van Oosting, and several uncredited. SC2.
